An internal medicine physician (also called an internist) specializes in caring for the health of adults. Like family medicine physicians, they may serve as primary care providers for adults.
Internal medicine doctors focus on the prevention and treatment of the full spectrum of adult diseases, conditions and medical needs. Internists manage preventative care as well as evaluate and treat acute and chronic illnesses, coordinate medical services as needed, and team with other specialists for a continuum of care for their patients.
